Peggy Walsh Craig Steps Down
After a 22-year relationship with COPF, former Managing Director Peggy Walsh Craig is stepping down from her transition activities with COPF. The organization's Executive Director Victoria Turner Shoemaker established a new office in Guelph, Ontario last year. Peggy was honoured with a retirement dinner sponsored by the COPF Board of Directors on October 2 in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
Peggy commented, "When I started with COPF, some directors had served on the Board for over 25 years. People said it was 'an old boys' club'. With the help of many others, the organization became flexible and innovative in the face of dynamic industry changes over the last 20 years."
There are many people who were instrumental in the success of COPF between 1991-2011, most notably:
Bill Schwan, (Yoder Canada) who served as COPF Treasurer and could always be counted on for insightful advice and support.
Mac Isnor, (Avon Valley Greenhouses) was invaluable on the Long-Range Planning Committee.
Janet MacLeod, (Westbrook Greenhouses) President 1991-93, developed new member agreements virtually from scratch and the Board had the good sense to let her do it.
Bruce Macdonald, (University of British Columbia Botanical Gardens) President 1993-95, had a knack for getting disparate people to work together and it was an eye-opener to see the results.
Todd Baker, (Jiffy) President 2002-06, made Board meetings move fast and feel productive, which is no mean feat!
Philip Thompson, (Horticolor Canada) President 2008-12 whose steadfast guidance could always be counted on, especially during unstable times in the industry.
Claude Lemieux, Campbell Davidson, Eric Voogt, Laurie Scullin, Tom Intven, Sylvia Mosterman, George Alkema, John Schroeder and Wilf Nichols all made significant contributions to COPF during Peggy's tenure.
The effectiveness of COPF depends upon many strong relationships within the industry. Peggy also acknowledged these individuals: Jacques Ferare (Conard-Pyle), Jeremy Deppe (Spring Meadow Nursery), Geoff & Maureen Needham (Planthaven), Stefanie Brabandt and Martin Rörhig (DSG), Andy Higgins (Paul Ecke Ranch), Nancy Collins and Bruce Melin (Syngenta), Al Davidson and Ruza Leslie (Ball FloraPlant), Brenda Cole (Bioflora), Rob Fluit (JVK), Lou Schenck (Schenck Farms), Jørgen Selchau (GPL), the Kordes family (Kordes Jungpflazen), and last but not least, Tony Slack (David Austin Roses).
In parting, Peggy said, "I have always believed that if one has performed well, one is not replaced, but someone else comes along with talents, skills and insights to take an organization to the next level. I am content to leave COPF's reins in Victoria's capable and determined hands going forward. With the Board's help and guidance, COPF is in a good position to re-invent itself for the 21st Century. It's been a fantastic and wonderful opportunity to know and work with you all."
